Few early jet images carry as much weight as this one, which shows the Boeing 707 in flight during the period when it was introduced as America's first jet transport. The record is dated July 15, 1954, the same day the prototype, nicknamed the Dash 80, is generally credited with its first flight, although the catalog notes that this date comes from an unverified caption card. Built by the Boeing Airplane Company of Seattle, the 707 helped shape commercial air travel after Pan American World Airways began jet service across the Atlantic in 1958. The photograph is worth a close look for its view of the aircraft at a time when propeller airliners still dominated the skies.
