Rather than a view of the building, this print records its layout: the first-floor plan of the Imperial Military Academy in Istanbul, reproduced as an albumen print from an album captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French. The album belongs to the collection associated with Sultan Abdul Hamid II, whose reign from 1876 to 1909 included sustained efforts to reorganize and expand Ottoman military schools. Plans like this one show how the rooms and corridors of a working academy were arranged, which makes them useful to researchers of late nineteenth-century Ottoman architecture and military training.
