Taken from the training grounds of the Imperial Military Academy in Istanbul, this print shows the open drill space where cadets of the Ottoman army practiced. It was made by the photographer Föbus between 1890 and 1893 and captioned in both Ottoman Turkish and French, which suggests it was meant for an audience beyond the empire. The print is one of a group in an album of military schools that belonged to the collection of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, whose reign was marked by a heavy investment in the army and its institutions.
