The view looks down from the Teşvikiye district of northern Istanbul toward the Imperial Military Academy, the Harbiye school that trained Ottoman officers. The photographer, Föbus, captioned the print in Ottoman Turkish and French, and it is number 15 in an album of the empire's military schools. The album is part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. Sultan Abdul Hamid II reigned from 1876 to 1909 and placed great importance on the army, so views of its academies were prepared as official records of the state's modernizing projects.
