The Piave River, which runs from the Dolomites to the Adriatic, was the line where Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces fought some of the bitterest positions of the First World War, and this photograph shows the front-line trenches dug along its banks. The record dates it only to the years between 1914 and 1918, and its caption card links the scene to the Red Cross, a reminder that relief organizations worked close to the fighting in Italy as well as on the Western Front. Italy entered the war in 1915 and the Piave became a key defensive barrier after the disaster at Caporetto in late 1917. Trench images like this one show how static the fighting had become.
