The photograph shows the front of the NAACP's Spingarn Medal as it was presented to the concert tenor Roland Hayes in 1924. The NAACP created the award in 1914 to honor outstanding achievement by an African American, and Hayes, who had built an international career singing classical music and spirituals, was among its early recipients. The image records the medal itself, so it is useful for seeing the object that marked the honor, which the NAACP used to recognize achievement in the arts, science, and public life. The photograph belongs to the NAACP's visual records at the Library of Congress.
