Mahlon Pitney, a New Jersey lawyer and Republican, went from the state's courts to the U.S. Supreme Court, where President William Howard Taft appointed him in 1912. He served until 1922, when poor health forced him to step down. The portrait was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed many lawmakers, judges, and officials of the period, so it reflects the formal style used for official portraits in the capital. The caption card does not record a date, so the sitting is best understood within Pitney's decade on the Court.
