Few portraits of Edward Ward Carmack, the Tennessee newspaper editor and U.S. senator, were made by a Boston studio, which is what sets this one apart. The photographer, J.E. Purdy, is named on the copyright line, and the sitter's name and dates appear on the caption card, which the library notes is unverified. Carmack was known in Tennessee for his outspoken editorials and his political fights, and he was shot and killed in Nashville in 1908 amid a bitter feud. The portrait, dated around 1902, shows him during his years in the Senate.
