Davis Rich Dewey, the economist pictured here, was the brother of the philosopher John Dewey, and he spent much of his career teaching and writing about economics in Massachusetts. He is best remembered for his work on American financial history, including a survey of the nation's monetary and banking past that was long used by students of the subject. The catalog card gives no date for the portrait, so its exact age is unknown, but it likely dates from the period when Dewey was establishing his reputation as a scholar. Portraits of academics from that era were often made for publications or institutional use.
