Hubert Work's portrait comes from Underwood & Underwood, the news photography firm that supplied newspapers and magazines with images of public figures during the 1920s. Work, a Colorado physician who turned to politics, served as Postmaster General under Warren Harding, later as Secretary of the Interior, and also led the Republican National Committee. By 1929 he was a familiar figure in Washington, and studio portraits like this one were widely circulated to accompany stories about federal officials and party affairs. The caption details in this record are unverified, so the exact occasion for the picture remains uncertain.
