Jane Addams, the Chicago social reformer and co-founder of Hull House, is the subject of this c1935 portrait, the year of her death. Addams spent decades organizing settlement work for immigrants and the urban poor, and she later became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. The print is a photographic copy, and its caption card is noted as unverified, so the exact sitting and photographer remain uncertain, though the image fits the sober, dignified portraiture of her later years.
