Jozef Piłsudski is the man pictured, and the caption card's date of 192- places the portrait in the 1920s, when he was among the most influential figures in newly independent Poland. He had led Polish legions during World War I and served as Chief of State after Poland regained its independence in 1918. In 1920 he directed the army that halted the Soviet advance toward Warsaw. Because the date is only partly legible, the portrait is best read as a view of how he was presented to the public during the country's early years of nation-building.
