Few pictures on this board show an Ethiopian fighter this close, with a rifle slung across his shoulder and his face clearly visible. The record places it in Addis Ababa around 1935, though the date carries a question mark and the caption card has been revised over time. The card's tracings link it to the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935 to 1936, when Italian forces invaded Ethiopia and wire services such as International News Photos sent images of the conflict to newspapers abroad. Pictures like this one gave American readers a human face on a war that was often reported from a distance.
