Taken in 1888, the year before he died, this portrait of Jefferson Davis is distinguished by its autograph inscription from his daughter, Mrs. Hayes, which sets it apart from the many other likenesses of the former Confederate president. The print was made by a photographer named Washburn, and details about its origin come from older caption notes that have not been fully verified. By the late 1880s Davis had long been out of public office. He had led the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865, was imprisoned after the war, and had published his account defending the Confederate government. Portraits like this one were often kept by family and admirers as personal keepsakes.
