Francis Lewis, born in Wales in 1713, is shown here in a reproduction of a painting by Albert Rosenthal, which was itself based on an engraving held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Lewis built a merchant career in New York and was one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, representing a colony whose loyalties were deeply divided. Because no widely accepted original likeness of him survives, portraits like this one, drawn from later engravings, became the standard way the public pictured the signers.
