This portrait shows Samuel Morgan Shortridge, a Republican who represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1921 to 1933, during his early years in office. It was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed many members of Congress and other officials in the 1920s, which is why its portraits show up so often in government and political collections. The record gives the date as about February 24, 1922, taken from an old caption card, so that date has not been independently verified. The portrait offers a useful glimpse of how legislators presented themselves to the public in the period between the two world wars.
