Steamboats named *John Brown* and *New York* are tied up at the landing on the Potomac River at Belle Plain, in Stafford County, Virginia, one of the Union Army's main supply points during the Civil War. The Quartermaster Corps ran the wharves and warehouses there, moving food, forage, ammunition, and equipment from river steamers onto wagons and trains bound for the Army of the Potomac. The record gives no exact date, but the caption ties the scene to the war years, 1861 to 1865. The side-wheel steamers and the stacked cargo along the shore show how much of the Union war effort depended on river transport.
