This print shows the Huguenots landing at New Rochelle, the settlement in what is now Westchester County, New York, where French Protestant refugees came ashore in 1688. They had fled France after Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had guaranteed certain rights to Protestants. The town they founded took its name from La Rochelle, the French port many of them had left. Because the image dates from around 1938, it reflects how later generations pictured this founding moment rather than a contemporary view.
