Prisoners captured at Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864 were sent to Belle Plain, a Union supply landing on the Potomac River in Virginia, where this picture was made. During Ulysses S. Grant's campaign against Robert E. Lee, Belle Plain grew into a major depot for the Army of the Potomac, and captured Confederates passed through it on their way north to prison camps. The record's caption card and later revisions are unverified, so details beyond the place and month deserve some caution. Images like this one offer a rare view of the men themselves during the bloody spring fighting of 1864.
