Few images in this set show the American role in the war's final months as plainly as this one, which records German prisoners being carried by motor truck in the Château-Thierry sector of northern France. Fighting around Château-Thierry in the summer of 1918, including the Second Battle of the Marne, drew American units into some of their first major engagements, and captured German soldiers were moved through the rear areas in growing numbers. The card was issued by the Keystone View Company, a large American maker of stereographs, and its c1929 date appears to reflect when the card was published rather than when the scene was photographed.
