A printed broadside dated January 4, 1776, from Watertown, Massachusetts, it is an official notice authorizing enlistment, a form of paper that circulated to call men into service during the early months of the war. In winter 1776 the Massachusetts provincial government was active in Watertown, and the colonial army was besieging British-held Boston nearby. Notices like this were posted in towns and taverns to recruit soldiers and to set the terms of service. Such single-sheet printings are rare survivors, and they show how the young war was organized on paper as well as on the field.
