Few medieval voyage tales have lasted as long as the story of Saint Brendan, the Irish monk said to have sailed the Atlantic in search of a promised land. This 1621 engraving turns the legend into a figurative map, charting the route as a series of islands and showing the monks saying Mass on the back of a whale, which they had taken for solid land until it moved. The story comes from the Latin *Navigatio Sancti Brendani*, a text that circulated widely across Europe for centuries and shaped how readers imagined the western ocean long before accurate charts existed.
