Most images on this board show broad scenes, but this engraving focuses on a single house: the birthplace of Horace Mann, the educational reformer who was born in Franklin, Massachusetts, in 1796. The print appeared as an illustration in Abijah Blake's History of Franklin, Mass., which places it opposite page 358 of that town history. Mann went on to lead the Massachusetts Board of Education and became a leading advocate for public common schools, so the modest farmhouse pictured here is tied to his later influence on American education. The record gives no date for the engraving itself, so it is best read as a local-history depiction of the house rather than a dated view.
