Horace Greeley, the newspaper editor who founded the New-York Tribune and later ran for president as the Liberal Republican candidate in 1872, is the subject of this portrait. Greeley was among the most widely read editors of the nineteenth century, known for his antislavery stance and his influential editorials, and he died in November 1872, shortly after his electoral defeat. The record gives no date or photographer, so the exact year of the sitting is unknown, but the dates on the caption card place his life within the decades when photographic portraits of public figures were increasingly common.
