Two albumen prints placed side by side compare portable dwellings in Russian Turkestan: a Kirghiz traveling tent on the left and a tent labeled Bukharsky on the right. Credited to N.V. Bogaevsky and dated about 1872, the pair comes from a period when Russia was extending its control over Central Asia and photographers were documenting its peoples and landscapes. Felt-covered, lattice-framed tents like these were built to be packed and moved, suiting herding households that followed seasonal pastures.
