Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) is the subject of this reproduction of a painting, a portrait of the Italian astronomer and physicist whose telescopic observations reshaped how people understood the heavens. Born in Pisa, he later worked in Padua and Florence, where he championed the Copernican view that the Earth moves around the Sun, a position that brought him into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church and led to his trial in 1633. The caption card carries no date, so the print's origin is uncertain, but the figure it depicts remains one of the defining names of the scientific revolution.
