Rather than showing Galileo at work, this engraving serves as the frontispiece to an 1821 volume of his memoirs and letters, and it was drawn after a work by the painter F. Benvenuti. The print appeared nearly two centuries after Galileo's death in 1642, when interest in his legacy was growing. By then his name was tied to the telescopic discoveries he announced in 1610 and to his 1633 condemnation by the Roman Inquisition, which kept him under house arrest for the rest of his life. Engravings like this one helped fix that complicated reputation into a lasting public image.
