Few figures from the early 1600s are as instantly recognizable as Galileo Galilei, the Pisan-born mathematician and astronomer whose life spanned 1564 to 1642. He is best known for turning a telescope toward the heavens and reporting that Jupiter had moons of its own and that the Moon's surface was rugged rather than smooth, observations that strained the Aristotelian view of a perfect cosmos. His support for the Copernican idea that the Earth moves around the Sun brought him into conflict with the Church, and he spent his final years under house arrest near Florence. This lithograph is an unverified print, so its exact date and maker are uncertain, but it likely reflects the enduring image of a man who helped reshape how people understood the sky.
