Titled *The Eighth Wonder of the World*, this color lithograph celebrates the Atlantic telegraph cable at the moment it finally worked. Kimmel & Forster issued it in New York in 1866, the year a durable cable linking Ireland and Newfoundland was completed, after an earlier attempt in 1858 failed within weeks. The title casts the cable as a marvel rivaling the ancient wonders, a framing typical of allegorical prints from the 1860s that treated new technology as nearly miraculous. It offers a useful view of how Americans understood a link that reduced transatlantic messages from days to minutes.
