Rockwell Kent's wood engraving takes its title from the closing line of the Communist Manifesto, published by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848. Kent, better known for his northern landscapes and seafaring books, turned to labor and political themes during the Depression, and this 1937 print is one of an edition of 150 signed in pencil by the artist. A study drawing for the composition also survives, pointing to the care he took in shaping its stark, collective figures.
