Billing itself as "the most extraordinary medicine in the world for horses," this c1850 piece promotes Equarian condition powders, a product sold to horse owners. In the mid-nineteenth century, when horses powered farm work, freight and city travel, tonics like these were a staple of the patent medicine trade, and makers rarely had to prove their claims before federal drug labeling rules arrived with the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. The boastful title shows how such advertising sold hope as much as remedy.
