Tracings on the original caption card link this picture to seamen, the Navy, courtship, and bicycles, though the record itself marks these details as unverified. The photograph dates to about 1899, when the bicycle craze was at its height in the United States and cycling gave young couples a fashionable reason to spend time together. The Navy was also much in the public eye after the Spanish-American War, which may explain the sailor theme in popular photography of the period. Scenes like this one were often staged to tell sentimental stories for a wide audience.
