Breaking that backbone" is a wartime political cartoon whose title suggests a picture of decisively breaking the enemy's strength, a theme common in Northern caricature during the Civil War. Currier & Ives published the lithograph from its Nassau Street office in New York, probably in late 1862 or early 1863, and it is signed "BDay del." for Benjamin H. Day Jr., a caricaturist who worked for the firm. Inexpensive prints like this reached a broad audience, so they show how ordinary readers were invited to see the war and its leaders.
