A young Jicarilla girl wears a feast dress hung with beaded necklaces, a cape, and metal medals, the ornaments the record singles out for this portrait. Edward S. Curtis made the image around 1905 as part of his effort to document Native American life for his multivolume *The North American Indian*, which he began publishing in 1907. The Jicarilla, an Apache people of northern New Mexico, held feast occasions where families wore their finest clothing, and Curtis often posed sitters to show such garments in detail. Viewers today may also notice that the portrait centers on a child's dress and adornment rather than a ceremony.
