Titled "Strassenbilder," or "street scenes," and credited to F.G. Schulz in Stuttgart, this hand-colored lithograph shows men and women at work, with the record noting employment as its main subject. The print is dated between 1850 and 1860, when Stuttgart, capital of the Kingdom of Württemberg, was an active center of German printing. Lithography, developed by Alois Senefelder in Munich in 1796, let printers reproduce drawings in numbers, and color was often added by hand, sheet by sheet. Images of ordinary workers in city streets like this one give a useful view of the trades and daily life of the period.
