Showing Jesse James from the waist up, fully clothed, this print records his body after he was shot dead in his St. Joseph, Missouri, home in April 1882. R. Uhlman, a St. Joseph photographer, made the picture from a slightly different angle than another known image of the same scene. Post-mortem photographs like this were common in the nineteenth century, when families and newspapers wanted a lasting record of a notorious face. The date of about 1882 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
