Few views of Acoma show its ladders and crowded adobe houses as plainly as this one, which the record dates to about January 6, 1905, during a feast day. Acoma sits on a mesa in western New Mexico and has been inhabited for centuries, and residents long reached its upper houses by ladder. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph for his multivolume study *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as a plate in the supplement to volume 16.
