In this platinum print, Fred Holland Day, the Boston photographer and publisher, poses in a sailor suit with a Russian cigar, a playful costume that fits his theatrical approach to portraiture. Day was a leading figure in the American pictorialist movement and a close associate of the Photo-Secession circle, and he often staged his subjects and himself in deliberate, symbolic scenes. The catalog record lists Clarence White as a possible maker, though the attribution is not certain. Platinum paper, prized by pictorialists for its soft, subtle tonal range, gives the image its quiet, velvety finish.
