Wash day" takes a household chore as its subject, and the title alone points the viewer toward the labor at the center of the scene. In the 1920s, washing was often a full-day job for American families: water was heated, clothes were scrubbed by hand or run through a wringer washer, and then hung outdoors to dry. Photographs of such everyday routines are valuable to historians because they record domestic work that was too familiar to seem worth documenting at the time.
