Kanab Wash, a dry drainage in the Colorado River basin, appears on this albumen stereograph made in 1872 during the U.S. Army's Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, led by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler. Wheeler's Corps of Engineers parties mapped and recorded the Southwest's rugged terrain, and their photographs were among the first detailed visual records of many of these remote canyons and washes. Printed on a stereo card, the picture was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the landscape a sense of depth that a flat print could not. The card is part of the survey's Colorado River series, so it also documents the broader effort to understand the river system's geography.
