A stereograph titled "The tired wash woman," numbered 4 in its series, shows a laundress at rest, a figure that would have been familiar in American households and laundries of the 1870s. Cards like this were made as pairs of slightly offset photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, appeared to stand out in three dimensions. Parlor audiences bought such scenes in large numbers, and genre subjects like domestic labor were a popular choice, offering viewers a glimpse of ordinary work presented as a moment to look at closely.
