A woman sits at a spinning wheel, her attention fixed on the thread drawn between her hands, a craft that was already old-fashioned by the time this platinum print was made around 1930. Platinum printing was prized for its soft tonal range and matte surface, and by the 1920s and 1930s it had become a deliberate choice for photographers who wanted a handmade quality. The Library of Congress acquired the print in 1934, and its subject reflects a wider interest of the period in household handwork and rural traditions, which many Americans were beginning to see as something worth recording.
