The tapada, a saya and manto that let a Lima woman cover most of her face while moving through the city, is the subject here, and this watercolor shows one seated on a block of stone. Painters in Peru during the 1830s, many working in the costumbrista style, recorded such street figures to document everyday life in the years after independence. The custom had colonial roots, when the veil gave women a degree of privacy and anonymity in public, and it was already fading by mid-century. The plain stone seat keeps attention on the figure and the layered garment.
