A Franciscan friar in a brown habit, cord at the waist, is the sole subject of this watercolor, which dates from roughly 1830 to 1840 and is catalogued in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. Its title places the figure in Peru, a region then drawing considerable attention from European and American travelers who recorded local clergy, costume, and daily life in sketches like this one. Such costume studies were popular in the period as ethnographic records of colonial-era religious orders still active across Spanish America after independence.
