*Protector Engine No. 2* shows a single fire apparatus rather than a street scene, which sets it apart from many other prints of its time. The record dates it loosely to between 1848 and 1850 and classes it as a lithograph, a process that let small firms produce inexpensive pictures in quantity. The shelflist card links the work to Kellogg & Comstock, though that attribution is unverified. In these decades, volunteer fire companies were proud, competitive social clubs, and their engines were often polished, named and paraded through town, so a picture like this doubled as a record of equipment and a badge of local pride.
