Under cover of darkness, stretcher-bearers move among the wounded in this drawing made within the Union lines near Hatcher's Run, south of Petersburg, Virginia, in autumn 1864. The fighting there was part of the long siege of Petersburg, when both armies dug in and skirmishes and assaults along the western approaches to the city produced steady streams of casualties. The artist worked in pencil, Chinese white and black ink wash on brown paper, a combination that lets the pale highlights of lanterns and bandages stand out against the dark ground. Night scenes of field medical work like this one were relatively uncommon in wartime imagery, and they show the labor behind the battlefield more than the battle itself.
