Rather than a general view of the frigate, this lithograph records one specific engagement: the capture of the British frigate Java, which the title says lasted 1 hour and 55 minutes. The fight took place off the coast of Brazil in December 1812, early in the War of 1812, and it was one of the victories that built the American ship's reputation. The caption tallies the cost on both sides, listing 9 Americans killed and 25 wounded against 60 British killed and 170 wounded. The print itself dates from about 1846, decades after the battle, which shows how long this early naval triumph remained a point of national pride.
