Published in London in 1815, this engraving shows the British capture of Washington in August 1814, when British forces entered the young American capital and set fire to its public buildings, including the Capitol and the President's House. Its origin in an English history book matters: the plate was issued as an illustration in Rapin's *History of England*, so it presents the event from the British side rather than as an American account. Prints like this one were widely circulated in Britain and helped shape how readers there understood the war with the United States.
