This aquatint is distinguished by its focus on the wharves and waterfront along the Potomac, rather than the streets or buildings of the planned capital. Around 1795, Georgetown was a busy tobacco and grain port that predated the federal city, which was only beginning to take shape nearby after 1791. The print's catalog record links it to Georgetown and to the 2002 exhibition "The View from Here: Images of Early Georgetown" at Dumbarton House, which suggests how such views helped record a working river town on the edge of a new capital.
