The scene shows the Japanese embassy's members and attendants at a formal dinner in Washington, where the delegation was lodged at Willard's Hotel in the spring of 1860. The mission was the first official Japanese diplomatic delegation to the United States, sent to exchange ratifications of the 1858 Treaty of Amity and Commerce, and its visit drew wide public curiosity. Harper's Weekly printed this wood engraving in its May 26, 1860 issue, so it reflects how American illustrators recorded the visitors' appearance and social customs for readers who had seldom seen Japanese officials in person.
